Web Site Options by Dave Van Zandt

Before making this decision you must consider the amount of cash on hand to pay for the website, the potential revenue created by having a web presence and who is going to develop your site? I am going to try to explain the many ways you can get your business on the web.

The first and least expensive is the do it yourself method. Most large hosting companies provide a template based service if you buy their hosting. GoDaddy has a program called Website Tonight, which allows you to create a website all by yourself and have it published on the internet. This is a great option if you want to spend a minimal amount of money and have low expectations for potential profit from your website. It gets your information out there and you are in complete control of design, but the drawback is your website will look like it was created for free.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is the website created by a large web design company. There is no doubt that this type of company will deliver a high quality website and provide features that a free website could never do, such as e-commerce and search engine optimization. In fact, a company like this has a specialist employed for all services involved in web development. If you have a large business and expect significant revenue through your website then this is the best option. As you can expect, this type of service does not come cheap. A price tag of $10,000+ should be expected if you seek the services of a large full service web development company.

The final option is to hire a freelance web designer to create and manage your site. A freelancer is less expensive than a large web development company and can provide designs that rival the big companies. A freelancer will charge less because they don’t have the overhead of a large company. In other words, they are not paying other people to create different aspects of your website. If you are a business who is looking for a professional online presence, but don’t want to spend up to 5 figures, then a freelancer is the best option. Hiring a freelance web designer is no different than hiring an employee for your business. You need to interview prospective freelancers until you find the ideal candidate. Ask questions until you are satisfied that this is the right person for the job. Get firm quotes, deadlines and get them in writing.
